Module 3.3 will introduce you to the process of scraping Reddit using a combination of tools. Before beginning the module, read the following articles, which explore the processes of collecting, documenting, and analyzing digital data.
-
- Brock, Andre. “Critical Technocultural Discourse Analysis.” New Media & Society 20, no. 3 (2018): 1012-30.
- Visconti, Amanda. “When they came down: Participating in crowdsourced documentation of racist statue removals.” Scholars’ Lab, 2020, https://scholarslab.lib.virginia.edu/blog/participating-in-statue-removal-history-crowdsourcing/
Following the review of the above articles, review the following instructions for scraping data from reddit using a Google sheets-based tool. Then, watch this video, narrated by Dr. Anastasia Salter, which introduces the use of GitHub for research. If you use a Mac rather than a PC, review these instructions for setting up a virtual environment and using Python on a Mac, as the process is a little different.
To prepare for the assignments for this module, you will need to review the instructions for scraping Reddit using GitHub contained in these videos created by Dr. Anastasia Salter, which are divided into part 1 and part 2.
Following the review of these materials, complete the Reddit Scraping and Advanced Data Scraping assignments.
