Document Driven Research Methods Task 2

Hello everyone! As you’ll know from part 1, this is the part where we start to use documents online (in the form of little magazines) to develop some new research. Some of you have done this before, but to some of you looking at online archives like the Modernist Journals Project might be entirely new.

Step 1

Remind yourself of the database you did for your homework:

Step 2: Reading Discussion

Now that you’ve read the following for your homework, think about how they relate to your own research?

  • Bénel, Aurélien & Lejeune, Christophe. “Humanities 2.0: Documents, interpretation and intersubjectivity in the digital age” International Journal of Web Based Communities. 5, 2019, pp. 562-576.
  • Gitelman, Lisa. Paper Knowledge: Toward a Media History of Documents. Duke UP, 2014. (just the “Introduction: Paper Knowledge” chapter).

Step 3: Interpreting the Data we Created

Download the cleaned up version of our Magazines Data document here and open in Microsoft Excel. If you can’t see your data it’s because it didn’t contain enough information so had to be removed.

Step 4: Making Graphs

Open the file in Microoft Excel. Locate your sheet, or another sheet of your choice.

Using the Insert Chart function create a graph or chart that shows the data in your sheet. This is tricky. If you are feeling really brave, try and make a bigger chart bringing together the data in all the other sheets.

Step 5: Upload to Joint Drive

Save your chart and upload your Excel file.
